Meet Wahyu Ichwandardi— known to the world as Pinot. A pixel artist, freehand illustrator, stop-motion animator, and retro technology obsessive who builds astonishing, moving worlds on machines most people retired decades ago: a Nokia phone, a PalmPilot, an Amiga 1000, a Macintosh Plus. This is the first full tribute to his work — and it doesn't just document it. It moves.

Almost everything Pinot makes is built from motion, so IDEA rethought what a book could do: double-wiro bound, packed with flip-book sections, printed Post-It note inserts, sticker sheets, and cardboard inlays, so the pages animate, flick, and unfold the way his work does on screen. Turn fast enough and Donald Glover dances again. Inside: city skylines in obsessive pixel detail, nostalgic avatars, pop-culture icons from Grogu to Childish Gambino, and monumental undertakings like a black-and-white Flatiron Building and a frame-by-frame Empire State Building, built entirely on a Macintosh 128K.

In June 2022, Pinot suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for two weeks. It didn't stop the work. Relearning to draw with his non-dominant hand, he returned to his vintage machines as part of his recovery — pixel by pixel, piece by piece. That determination runs through every page.

Texts by Gary Vaynerchuk, Jérôme Jarre, Arwen, and Pinot. Designed by Karla Jarvinen.
