In 1979, 28-year-old photographer Sharon Smith walked into the Ritz — an East Village club at the heart of New York's New Wave scene — and became its resident camera girl, working the door at the Ritz, the Red Parrot, Studio 54, Roseland Ballroom, Palladium, Area, and more through the 1980s. Armed with an SX-70 and the persona of a 1940s B-movie photo girl, she talked her way into intimate, unposed Polaroids of Madonna, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, and a decade's worth of club kids and disco dancers — a rare, up-close document of nightlife history in the making.
