CANNES - Derek Ridgers
Derek Ridgers first went to the Cannes Film Festival in 1984 to photograph Afrika Bambaataa for NME. He came back another 11 times over the next twelve years, saw only two films, and spent most of his time on the beach with his camera. Cannes collects around 80 of those images — Clint Eastwood, Helmut Newton, John Waters, Grace Jones and Mick Jagger alongside the starlets, adult-film stars and paparazzi scrums that made up the festival's less buttoned-up decades. Topless, tipsy and totally unscripted, it's Cannes before camera phones — closer to a circus than a red carpet.
