DOOM by Anne Imhof, documented by Tess Petronio
Tess Petronio reached out to Anne Imhof for an internship while still at art school. Imhof's team said yes — inviting her to New York to intern on DOOM: House of Hope, Imhof's largest performance work to date, a three-hour piece loosely based on Romeo and Juliet with a cast of around 50 dancers and artists. Imhof suggested Tess document the cast as character studies; she ended up joining the performance itself, shooting live footage for the Jumbotron. This book collects the resulting photographs — the cast in their apartments, the dance studio, diners and bars after shows — an intimate record of the friendships that formed around one of Imhof's most ambitious works, bound like a screenplay with sketched cover art by tattoo artist Dean Violante.
