In the Vale of Avalon: Glastonbury Festival 1971
Paul Misso was Julie Christie's driver when film director Nic Roeg invited him to Glastonbury Fayre in 1971, planning to shoot a film of the festival with Misso taking stills. Roeg's footage never made it to screen — on seeing Misso's photographs, he declared that Paul had "captured it" and shelved his own film. Those photographs sat unseen for over 50 years. Now published for the first time, they document the festival's very first year: Hawkwind, Traffic, David Bowie and Fairport Convention performing for 12,000 free-ticketed festival-goers, the original pyramid stage rising from the Somerset fields, and the crackling, unrepeatable energy of the counterculture before Glastonbury became what it is today.
